Talent, Excitement and Fanfare Ensured Annual Field Hockey Tournament
was a Thrilling Success
3rd Annual Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament 2010.
SFHC and Dream star Surrey, British Columbia is set to host the action-packed 3rd Annual Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament 2010 when The Surrey Lions compete with a myriad of highly acclaimed field hockey teams, July 23-25, 2010.Last year brought over 8,000 to 10,000 participants & attendees and this year’s bigger and better event is set to expect a huge crowd. Former and present Hockey Olympians and other Hockey greats will be present at the tournament to promote the game of Field Hockey.
More than 22 of the world’s best teams in field hockey have confirmed they will compete in the Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament, an event that combines skill and talent on one field for three days. Opening ceremonies commence mid-morning on July 23rd and closing ceremonies will wrap up the fan-fare event on the evening of July 25th.
The 3rd Annual Tournament is the only large-scale, international field hockey competition and music festival in British Columbia Canada. The Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament is designed to promote and celebrate the spirit of the game of Field Hockey by creating a platform for today's athletes to compete in this sports discipline. The event features top field hockey athletes, as well as music and a variety of other activities. This year's Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament will see elevated levels of competition, an increased prize purse, and broadened appeal for spectators.
In addition, to playing and hosting a tournament this year, The Surrey Lions Field Hockey Club has included a Youth Field Hockey Program. As a way to give back to the community and foster a sense of sportsmanship, the club has 60 youth, boys and girls, learning the sport. Committee members state, “We are encouraged by the athleticism of our youth and want to help foster a way for them to attain scholarships, become World Cup participants, and future Olympians. Learning the fundamentals of field hockey, becoming fierce competitors, and understanding the many paths to attaining educational money and sports accolades with this sport is important. We are excited to help open doors for many youth.”
The competition is expected to be intense, the excitement electrifying, and the event an unparalleled experience for Field Hockey fans and athletes worldwide.
The tournament will be held for two categories of game play:
1. Men’s Open Championship. 2. Social – Men’s
This year many guest teams will be coming from abroad. Such as Namdhari XI, Air India from India, Team from Germany and one of the top team from England.
North America’s top field hockey teams will be fighting for the top honors while showcasing their skills and talent to all attendees. Teams from Freemont CA, Dallas Texas, Phoenix Arizona, Los Angeles CA, San Jose CA, Calgary AB, Edmonton AB, Toronto, Manitoba, Seattle WA, Sacramento, Yuba City, Y2K LA. In addition, some of our best local teams like United Bros, India Club, Surrey Sharks, Panthers, UBC, Hawks Club, West Vancouver and Army Volunteers will demonstrate their local field hockey tenacity.
2010 marks the third year of the Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament and again it is hosted by a committee of the Surrey Field Hockey Club. Free accommodations will be provided to guest teams in 5star hotel and meals such as, breakfast and lunch will be served to all teams. This year’s event will take place at the Tamanawis Field located in Surrey BC on 126th and 64 Ave. Please note that the entrance to the field is on 64th Avenue and free parking is available at Tamanawis Secondary School on 126 and 66 Avenue.

Surrey cup 2009
SURREY – July 30, 2009- The intense heat did not dampen the spirits of attendees, participants, and sponsors for their love of field hockey. Instead, record-breaking heat created record-breaking attendance of nearly 15,000 at the second annual hockey tournament, July 24-26. The well-organized Surrey Cup International Hockey Tournament created much commotion and cast a wide appeal for an almost unheard of sport.
More than 18 of the world’s best teams in field hockey competed in the tournament that combined skill and talent on one field for three days. The competition was intense, the excitement electrifying, and the event was an unparalleled experience for field hockey fans and athletes. With the generosity of sponsors, free langar and treats, like watermelon and cantaloupe were provided throughout the three-day event. Hockey veteran, Dhanraj Pilay created excitement by appealing to a receptive crowd with autographs and balloon art for the kids. Tamanawis Field, the location of this year’s tournament reflected and encouraged a festive ambiance with a decorated field of various colour flags.
Opening ceremonies commenced at 5pm on July 24 and former and present Hockey Olympians and other Hockey greats were present at the tournament to promote the game of Field Hockey. Special guests included, Mr. Senior Balbir Singh, Olympian, triple gold medalist; and Dhanraj Pilay, a Indian Hockey legend. Baldev Singh, Baljit Dhillon, and Mark Sunder, President of the BC Field Hockey Association. Also, in attendance was politician, Sukh Dhaliwal, Jagroop Brar, Harry Bains, Dr. Gulzar Cheema, talented players and respected coaches.
Top field hockey teams fought for honors while showcasing their skills and talent to all attendees. Highlights of the Tournament include:
- Men’s Open Championship final game was between Namdhari XI and United Bros. Namdhari XI, winning the coveted tournament trophy with a 3-1 score. Goals from Namdhari XI were scored by, Gurcharan Singh, Gurvinder Singh, and Karamjit Singh. Gabbar Singh Canada National team member provided the single goal for United Bros.
- Top three teams for Men’s Open Championship were Namdhari XI, United Bros., and Victoria, respectively.
- Men’s Social Division final game was between Sikander XI, Abbotsford and Phoenix Scorpions, where Abbotsford took 1st place with a 1-0 win.
- Best Player of Men’s Open was awarded to Mehar Singh of Namdhari 11.
- Best Player of Men’s Social was awarded to Gora.
- Skill tests were crowd pleasers and various players were awarded a prize in the following categories: Best Hitter, Best Penalty Take, Best Dribbler, and Best Goalkeeper.
- The closing ceremonies wrapped up the fan-fare event on the evening of July 26th with a cultural show that included a performance by the talented Surrey India Arts Club and Yasmina Girls Dance Group.

Namdhari XI, winning the coveted tournament trophy with a 3-1 score. Goals from Namdhari XI were scored by, Gurcharan Singh, Gurvinder Singh, and Karamjit Singh.
